As anyone who has seen Shilpa Shetty in Baazigar, she wasn’t always this slim and fit self. In fact in her own words she was quite ‘plump’. She says her fitness was a gradual process of discovery of what works for her and what doesn’t. But she maintains that fitness was always a part of her life. Shilpa was a volley ball player and was always conscious of what she is eating and how she is looking.
Shilpa does not believe in workouts to look good, she feels it is just an extension of the benefits. She goes to the gym more to feel good than look good. She believes that in order to be successful and achieve something you will have to be fit, otherwise you will not be able to work as hard as you want to.
Tryst with Yoga
Shilpa actually encountered yoga to recover from a neck problem. It was her physiotherapist who recommended it. After trying it out for some time, she felt more and more intrigued and took it up.
She was doing general yoga earlier and started Ashtanga yoga two years ago. She feels that yoga targets the mind; body and soul at one go. It opens all the windows to the body, just through breathing alone most of your problems are taken care of.
After winning the Big Brother show in UK, she was once again in the news. She became the overnight celebrity in UK and everyone wanted to know the secret to her amazing body. That is when Shilpa released her yoga DVD, which is 2 hour long video talking about the right way to perform the various asanas.
On being asked her motivation for producing the yoga DVDs, Shilpa said that money was never a motivation. It was her fans who asked her to show her routine and she wanted to create awareness about the multiple benefits of yoga. She has also undergone training before the video to understand the nitty-gritty of Ashtanga yoga.
Shilpa also believes in weight training with yoga to get the perfect body.
Her diet regime
Shilpa is a foodie; she loves food but eats only the right food. Quoting Shilpa on her views on dieting, “I believe it’s not about dieting, it’s about diet – even if you don’t have the time to work out, a healthy balanced diet will keep you in good shape.”

Morning: She starts her day with Aloe vera juice. According to her it is good for the immune system and the skin. She then proceeds to have porridge and tea with brown sugar.
Lunch: Shilpa has dal with brown rice or chapatti made from different grains that are high in fiber with chicken curry and one vegetable.
Evening: If she is hungry, Shilpa prefers one brown bread toast with 2 eggs and tea.
Dinner: She eats salad, soup and a chicken dish as dinner and has it early at night.

Shilpa maintains a 2000 calorie diet which is what she sticks to most of the days, one day of the week when she indulges in sweets like cakes, kulfi and gulab jamuns. But her indulgences are very few and in control.
Another thing that Shilpa believes in is that to replace all whites with browns that is, to replace white sugar, bread and rice with its brown variety.
Non vegetarian at heart
Shilpa comes from the ‘Bunt’ community and is non-veg food lover. She eats non-veg food on all days except Thursdays.
Shilpa confesses that she cannot do without her daily cup of chai in the mornings and evenings with green tea in the afternoon.
Shilpa Shetty is a follower of the Oneness university philosophy. It is a philosophy which believes in helping people achieving their dreams. The core belief is that you can achieve anything if your personal relationships are in order.
Another thing that has helped her to grow as a person is her belief in God. She says she feels like she is God’s special child. With this feeling of gratitude she has succeeded in overcoming all obstacles and being strong.
Quoting Shilpa Shetty on some fitness tips, she says, “Follow a healthy diet. If you don’t have time to work out, try and walk from your home to the station or use the stairs instead of the lift. Walk at least two kilo meters a day. There is nothing wrong in eating sweets, only eat them in proportion.”
